5-Day Certificate in Dental Therapy

This 5-day course is tailored for Dental Therapists and International Dental Graduates registered as Dental Therapists with the GDC in the UK. It equips participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to excel within the dental therapist scope of practice, particularly within the NHS system.

Designed to align with the new proposals set by the General Dental Council (GDC), this course ensures that dental therapists stay ahead of evolving professional standards while enhancing their expertise in operative procedures, paediatric dentistry, and UK healthcare regulations.

Module 4: Paediatric Dentistry

Our course provides you with essential knowledge and practical skills to manage paediatric patients confidently. You’ll learn to create a child-friendly environment, implement behaviour management techniques, and deliver high-quality dental care tailored to young patients.

  • Restorative Procedures: Gain hands-on experience with:

    • Pulpotomies and Pulpectomies: Learn techniques to manage pulp therapy for deciduous teeth.
    • Full coverage options, including stainless steel crowns and zirconia crowns.
  • Space Maintainers: Understand indications and placement to preserve arch integrity.
  • Behaviour Guidance Therapy: Master communication techniques to manage anxiety and build trust with children.

Practical Training:

Engage in hands-on sessions, including deciduous tooth procedures and the placement of stainless steel crowns, to ensure you’re equipped for real-world practice. This module is designed to build your confidence in paediatric dentistry, helping you provide the best care for your youngest patients.

Module 5: Prescribing Local Anaesthesia & Antimicrobials (Section 17 Exemption)

This online training day, combined with an online portfolio, equips dental therapists and hygienists with the knowledge and skills required to obtain a Section 17 exemption under the Human Medicines Regulations (HMRs).

Under this exemption, dental hygienists and therapists can supply and administer specific prescription-only medicines (POMs) without a prescription, enabling them to provide more comprehensive oral healthcare.

Upon successful completion, participants will:
✔ Prescribe local anaesthesia and select antimicrobials
✔ Gain direct access, improving patient care efficiency
✔ Expand clinical autonomy, reducing reliance on dentist prescriptions
