Diploma in Prosthodontics (Level 7)

The Diploma in Prosthodontics (Level 7) is a combination of the Restorative course & the Operative course.

The Diploma aims to support the development of delegates clinical knowledge and hands-on skills in dental prostheses. The qualification consists of 25 modules in the form of seminars, practical sessions, demonstrations and online zoom seminars. There are 22 face-to-face days and 3 online zooms.

The course itself provides the opportunity to increase your knowledge about key elements of Restorative Dentistry and apply these in hands-on sessions to improve your Operative skills. It is a perfect combination of theory and practical, giving you the opportunity to learn new techniques and consequently practice them on Phantom Heads so you can return to your practice and implement them the very next day.

During the course, the topics covered are Occlusion, Articulators, TMJ Splints, Basic Tooth Preparations, Introduction to Endodontics & Periodontics and Treatment Planning. Within the Operative area of the course you will work with Professor Tipton’s hand-picked team of demonstrators to practice techniques related to Anterior and Posterior Tooth Preparation, Bonded Crowns, Ceramic Crowns, Porcelain Inlays/Onlays, Direct Composite Restorations, Gold Preparations and Bridge Preparations.

The Diploma in Prosthodontics (Level 7) will provide the knowledge and experience you need to understand, plan and deliver varied treatment options for your patients, backed up by the technique and science behind your decision making and treatment delivery.

Delegates have two options for earning their Diploma. They can complete both courses side-by-side, finishing within approximately 12 to 18 months. Alternatively, they can pursue the Diploma by completing the individual certificates one after another, achieving their Diploma in approximately 24 months.

Qualification:

To obtain a Level 7 Qualification, participants must complete various assessments, including Direct Observation of Performance (DOPS), reflective write-ups, clinical portfolios, treatment planning assignments, and multiple-choice questions.

Upon completion of the course and the assessments involved, you will receive three qualifications: a Level 7 Certificate in Restorative Dentistry, a Level 7 Certificate in Operative Dentistry and a Level 7 Diploma in Prosthodontics. All qualifications are accredited by EduQual & The Royal College of Surgeons of England. Centre accreditation from RCSEng is an award of excellence, and we take immense pride in our courses being the first & only private training courses to gain this accreditation.

Show biography»

I qualified from Sheffield in 1987 and moved to Kent in 1994, working at his current practice since 1998, becoming a co-owner in 2002 and achieving Denplan Excel Accreditation in 2004.

For over 20 years I have sought out the best teachers in the world in cosmetic, reconstructive and functional dentistry to gain the skills that I now offer patients at Sturry Dental Practice in Canterbury, Kent. I created the exclusivesmiles.co.uk brand to showcase the best that modern dentistry has to offer. I also provide sessions at Sittingbourne Memorial Hospital for Medway Community Healthcare as a Dental Officer treating special needs patients.

As a previous full member of the British Academy of Cosmetic dentistry (BACD), I have experience in treating all type of cosmetic problems from simple tooth whitening to full smile makeovers. In the past I have been a member of the BACD membership, communication and congress committees. I have a reputation for a conservative approach to dentistry that will offer long term aesthetic results from the minimum of intervention; this can be seen with my use of various brace systems to align teeth prior to a final makeover.

I have a special interest in the treatment of head, neck and facial pain and its relation to poor jaw function and am a member of the British Society of Occlusal Studies (BSOS) which exists to help practitioners treat and prevent these common problems. Membership is by invitation only to practising dentists who have completed an arduous training programme which typically takes five years. I have lectured on the subject to other dentists and technicians and provided hands on courses on Facebow use and jaw registration.

I am an “opinion leader” for Ivoclar Vivadent and lecture and tutor hands on courses for them on Composites, Cements and tooth preparation for the Emax ceramic system.

I like to help people to understand what dentistry can offer them and as the No1 ‘Active Dentist’ on the award-winning patient education website All About Teeth (allaboutteeth.co.uk), spend time answering the public’s questions regarding their dental concerns. I am also a member of the Association of Dental Implantology UK (ADI, visit adi.org.uk), a registered charity dedicated to providing the profession with continuing implant education and the public with a greater understanding of the benefits of dental implants. I am a full member of the Tipton Training Dental Academy which provides me with the latest dental scientific knowledge and clinical techniques. I am honoured to have been asked by Paul Tipton to act as a Study Club Chairperson for the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry

Dr Andy Carragher

LDS RCS, BDS, MClinDent, CPS

Show biography»

During 25 years in General Dental Practice , 21 years of which were as a sole principal, I have experienced all facets of UK dentistry from exclusively NHS practice to exclusively Private practice.

From the very beginning of my career I have been keen to improve my skills and knowledge. My commitment to postgraduate education ultimately led to a Master’s degree in Prosthodontics. This in turn led to a major career change when just six months after graduation I became a full-time Senior Clinical Teacher in Restorative Dentistry at Liverpool University Dental Hospital.

In this role over the last 12 years I have taught hundreds of undergraduates the fundamentals of Restorative dentistry and supervised the same students on clinic from their first ever patient until the day they pass their final examinations.

I have a special interest in Aesthetic dentistry and have taught on the Crown Course since 2006. Together with a colleague we founded an Advanced Composite Techniques course for senior students.

This year a student whose entry I supervised was chosen as the UK National Winner and is due to compete at the Global Final of the DENTSPLY Sirona Clinical Skills Competition in Konstanz Germany this June.

I have great enthusiasm for teaching dentistry performed to a high standard which can be predictable and long lasting. More importantly, for our patients such treatment can be transformative in terms of confidence and self-esteem.

I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with postgraduate students looking to take their practice of dentistry to the next level and beyond.

Professor Tipton and his team of highly experienced clinicians have revolutionized the way I examine, diagnose, plan and treat my patients. I simply didn't know what I didn't know and I am now able to utilise this knowledge to greatly help my patients whilst enhancing my practice and increasing my turnover. Courses don't get better than this! ~ Simon Burgess

Why should I do the Level 7 Diploma in Prosthodontics?

The Level 7 Diploma in Prosthodontics provides an opportunity to increase your scientific knowledge and hands-on skills. It is a perfect combination of theory and practical giving you the opportunity to learn the new techniques, practice them on Phantom Heads and eventually return to your practice and implement them straightaway. Regardless of whether you want to get into Private Dentistry or are just motivated to improving your knowledge and providing better treatments to your patients, this course will enhance your skills so you can achieve your ambitions.

What is the benefit of doing Level 7 Diploma in Prosthodontics and not just to the Level 7 Certificate in Restorative Dentistry and Level 7 Certificate in Operative Dentistry?

The benefits of doing a Level 7 Diploma when compared to doing the separate Level 7 Certificates is firstly that you will save approximately 6% on course fees. More importantly, should you choose to do the Level 7 Diploma in the standard format within 12 to 18 months you can also reap the advantages of improved treatment delivery earlier. You can choose any options you feel suitable as Tipton Training has a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy which will ensure that your existing education within another Tipton Training course is taken into consideration. It is important to note that every time you do a Level 7 Diploma or a Level 7 Certificate you must pay additional registration fees. So, should you choose to register for each course separately, you are paying 3 registrations fees. The flip side is you also get 3 certificates. It all depends on what your ambitions are.

I have done to Level 7 Certificate in Restorative Dentistry previously can I join the Level 7 Diploma for the Operative element?

Yes, you can. The Level 7 Diploma in Prosthodontics contains Units covered in the Level 7 Certificate in Restorative Dentistry and Level 7 Certificate in Operative Dentistry. Essentially you can do the Level 7 Diploma if you have completed any one of those courses. Tipton Training has a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy which will ensure that your existing education within another Tipton Training course is taken into consideration.
