It’s ideal for students who want to strengthen their university applications, gain hands-on experience, and develop key skills needed for a successful career in dentistry. No prior experience is needed, just enthusiasm and an interest to learn more about what dentistry entails.
Dentistry is a dynamic and rewarding profession that blends science, healthcare, and practical skills to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. As a dentist, you’ll play a vital role in improving oral health, alleviating pain, and boosting patients’ confidence through transformative treatments. The field blends a unique mix of hands-on practical skill with problem-solving, precision, and patient care, ensuring that no two days are the same. With diverse career opportunities—including general practice or specialist dentistry—dentistry provides strong job security, career growth, and the satisfaction of helping individuals and communities. If you’re looking for a career that is intellectually engaging, hands-on, and deeply rewarding, dentistry could be the perfect path for you.
Work experience is a crucial part of a strong dental school application. It allows students to gain first-hand insight into the profession, helping them understand the realities of a career in dentistry beyond what they can learn from research alone. Admissions teams look for applicants who demonstrate commitment, enthusiasm, and an awareness of the skills required to be a successful dentist—qualities that work experience helps develop.
By observing or assisting in a dental setting, students can see patient interactions, learn about different dental procedures many of which they will be introduced to during Part 1; and appreciate the importance of communication, precision, and professionalism. Work experience also provides valuable talking points for personal statements and interviews, showcasing a student’s initiative and motivation. Ultimately, it helps students confirm their interest in dentistry, preparing them for the challenges and rewards of dental school and beyond.
